Among all trekking routes in Sikkim, the Dzongri Trek is considered the true introduction to the high Himalayas.
Starting from the historic village of Yuksom, once the first capital of Sikkim, this trail leads you deep into the Kanchenjunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of pristine forests, glacial rivers and alpine meadows. Unlike short hikes, Dzongri is a real mountain journey where each day gradually takes you higher into the Himalayan ecosystem.
The trail passes through hanging bridges over turquoise streams, ancient rhododendron forests, waterfalls, yak pastures and remote mountain shelters. As altitude increases, trees begin to disappear and vast open valleys appear. The air becomes thin, the silence deeper and the sky infinitely clear.
Then comes the moment every trekker waits for, sunrise at Dzongri Top (approx. 13,200 ft).
At dawn, the first golden light touches the Kanchenjunga massif along with peaks like Pandim, Kabru, Rathong and Kokthang. The mountains glow in shades of gold and pink while clouds float beneath the viewpoint. This is one of the most celebrated panoramic viewpoints in the entire Eastern Himalaya.
The Dzongri Trek is challenging enough to feel adventurous, yet achievable for determined beginners with good fitness. It is the perfect balance between wilderness and accessibility, a trek that introduces you to the grandeur of the Himalayas without requiring technical climbing.
This is where many travelers fall in love with mountain trekking forever.
